FM: Egypt strongly opposes military strike against Syria

The Egyptian government said on Thursday it opposes "strongly" a military strike against Syria.

The U.S. and its Western allies announced a possible military strike to Syria accusing the regime of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of using chemical weapons to attack Syrian civilians.
 
According to AFP, Egypt's Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy said in statement that Egypt will not take part in any military attack against Syria as it stands opposed to foreign military interference in Syria.
 
Egypt believes the use of force in international relations is unacceptable except in the case of self-defense or under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
 
He called on the UN Security Council to make every effort to investigate the alleged chemical attack.
 
The Syrian regime has been accused of using chemical weapons in an attack last August in the countryside surrounding Damascus, the Syrian capital.
 
Fahmy condemned the practices of the Syrian regime against its people and the use of chemical weapons by either sides of the conflict. Fahmy stressed the neeed to find a political solution to the crisis as soon as possible.
 
NATO and Western countries announced the need to respond to the Syrian regime's use of chemical weapons against civilians.
 
The Security Council was unable to reach an international consensus on a British draft resolution demanding the use of force against Syria, due to the supportive position of Russia and China.
