FM, Anany review development of UNESCO top post nomination campaign

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty on Saturday 27/7/2024 discussed with Egypt’s candidate Dr. Khaled al-Anany for the post of director-general of the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the term 2025-2029, the developments of his campaign.

Egypt’s candidate to the top UNESCO post has won the endorsement of both the Arab League and the African Union.

The foreign minister underscored great significance attached by the state to such a key nomination, in light of the special importance of the UNESCO and its crucial role in preserving the world’s cultural and natural heritage as well as developing the education and promoting technology and culture, according to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid.

The spokesman highlighted distinguished historic relations between Egypt and the UNESCO.

Abdelatty instructed providing all means to support the Egyptian candidate by all relevant sectors at the Foreign Ministry and Egypt’s diplomatic missions abroad, as well as through organizing intensified foreign tours during which Enany will meet senior officials of UNESCO-Member States, in coordination with Egyptian embassies abroad, the spokesman said.

In February, the Executive Council of the African Union (AU) announced its endorsement of Enany’s candidacy.

The election for UNESCO’s top position is scheduled to take place during the last quarter of 2025.

In April 2023, Egypt announced the nomination of Professor Enany for the prestigious UNESCO position.
