FM affirms Egypt’s full support for Palestinian Authority

CAIRO, Sept 23 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty affirmed Egypt’s full support for the national Palestinian Authority, despite Israeli attempts to undermine it.

During a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the margins of the high-level meetings of the 79th Session of the UN General In New York on Monday, Abdelatty said Egypt will continue its efforts for imposing a ceasefire in Gaza and mobilize international support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, according to Ministry Spokesman Tamim Khallaf.

He also welcomed UNGA’s endorsement of the advisory opinion of the ICJ on the legal consequences arising from Israel’s policies and practices in Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), including East Jerusalem, and from the illegality of Israel’s continued presence in OPT.

Egypt will also continue its efforts to enable the Palestinian Authority to resume its administration and law enforcement role in Gaza, Abdelatty said, highlighting Egypt’s efforts in cooperation with regional and international partners to expand recognition of the Palestinian state.

Abdelatty discussed mediation efforts led by Egypt, Qatar and the US to reach an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and open of all border crossings to allow unhindered flow of humanitarian assistance into the besieged enclave.

Abdelatty also underscored Cairo’s categorical rejection of any scenarios aimed at keeping the Gaza Strip under the occupation authorities’ rule, closing Rafah Border Crossing, displacing Palestinians from their lands, or legitimizing and expanding Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories to impose a fait accompli, the spokesman noted.

He said, “Egypt sees no alternative to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) to care for Palestinian refugees, asserting the importance of donor countries resuming their financial contributions to the UN agency. (MENA)
