The Freedom and Justice Party's Legal Affairs Committee in Alexandria denied reports that President Mohamed Morsy was subjected to an assassination attempt in the city on Friday.
Magdy Othman, head of the committee, alleged that state-owned Al-Ahram and other newspapers, websites and satellite channels falsely reported that there was an assassination attempt.
Al-Ahram alleged that the man who made the attempt was being interrogated by the general prosecution, state TV quoted Othman as saying Tuesday.
When the FJP looked into the subject in the public prosecution records, they found that the news was fabricated and that the name of the prosecutor cited by the newspaper was fake, Othman said.
Al-Ahram had reported that a prosecutor by the name of Mohamed Nawar was investigating the issue.
Othman explained that the FJP would submit a complaint against Al-Ahram for being the first newspaper to publish the news, saying that other newspapers and television channels also carried the news from Al-Ahram without verifying the facts.
He said that the FJP would accuse these news outlets of spreading false news, which is prohibited by law.
