FJP leader congratulates Obama on victory

Essam al-Erian, vice chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP,) congratulated US President Barack Obama on his election victory Saturday. His statements were the first official Egyptian reaction since Obama was elected for a second term on Wednesday.

"The Egyptian people and the whole world are waiting for the change President Obama promised during his election campaign," Erian told BBC, according to the Muslim Brotherhood website Ikhwan Online.

He said relations between the two countries from now on will be balanced and based on mutual respect, due to the political situation in post-revolution Egypt and President Mohamed Morsy's foreign policies.

"We cannot accept that Washington's policy would be based on interfering in Egyptian or other Arab affairs," he said.

Erian also expressed optimism that Obama's election could be conducive to finding a solutionto the crisis in Syria.

"I believe that the election of President Obama may also lead to finding a solution to the crisis in Syrian, to stop the bloodshed and achieve the aspirations of the Syrian people, by bolstering the Egyptian initiative put forward by Cairo and recently supported by Moscow," he said.
