FJP to contest parliamentary elections without alliances

Hesham al-Desouqy, a member of the supreme body of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, has said that his party's electoral lists will only include Brotherhood members for upcoming parliamentary elections.

“The party decided not to form alliances with liberal parties or get engaged in electoral alliances with Islamist forces,” he said, adding that including Islamist parties onone electoral list will weaken all of them.

“The party mulled all scenarios and probabilities. Standing for elections [on] pure Brotherhood lists will increase [our] chances [of securing] highest number of seats in the coming elections,” he said.

The FJP also decided to allocate five percent of its nominations for women.

Desouky’s statements came as Mohamed Abdel Latif, supreme body member of the Conference Party and the National Salvation Front, told the state-owned MENA news agency on Saturday that a proposal was made by FJP to form an alliance with the front during parliamentary elections.

“Civil forces, as well as the National Salvation Front, received an offer from the Freedom and Justice Party to coordinate during parliamentary elections, on condition of [engaging] in the national dialogue [held by the president's office with political figures],” Abdel Latif said.

“There are several differences in opinions and political ideologies. That’s what we noticed in the work of the Constituent Assembly, which makes an alliance between Islamists and the National Salvation Front absolutely impossible,” he added.
