The first phase of Cairo’s third line to be opened Tuesday, says source

On Tuesday, 10 January, the Ministry of Transportation is slated to open the third line of Cairo's metro system, it said on Thursday. The line links Attaba with Abbasseya.

An official source at the ministry said tickets would be sold for LE1, the same price as for the other two lines.

Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri, heads of companies which implemented the project and ministers are to take part in a ceremony at the Abbasseya metro stop to mark the opening, the source added.

Egyptian state-owned newspaper Al-Ahram quoted transport minister Galal Mostafa Saeed as saying that the costs of the third line are estimated at LE2.4 billion.

The first phase includes five metro stops: Attaba, Bab al-Shaareya, al-Geish, Abdu Basha and Abbasseya.

Saeed added that these areas are considered places of high congestion with vehicles and people.

There will be five air-conditioned trains working on this line expected to be used by 200,000 commuters per day, Saeed added. The journey between Attaba and Abbasseya will not exceed 10 minutes, which will help ease congestion in these areas.
