The International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) first hearing for South Africa’s lawsuit against Israel‘s crimes against Palestinians in Gaza began on Thursday.
The ICJ is scheduled to hold a two-day hearing on the case filed by South Africa, which accuses Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
The matter could lead the court to issue an emergency order to suspend the Israeli military campaign in the sector, according to CNN.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has jurisdiction over governments and individuals. Israel does not recognize the ICC, and therefore the court has no power over it.
However, Israel has signed the Genocide Convention which gives the ICJ jurisdiction over it.
