First EU-funded Egyptian satellite to be launched

Minister of State for Scientific Research Nadia Zakhary said the National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences (NARSS) is preparing to launch the first Egypt nanosatellite soon, according to state news agency MENA.

It weighs no more than 1.5kg and will be funded by the European Union.

Zakhary said offers from India and Kazakhstan to launch the nanosatellite are being considered. It’s characterized by the ability to take photographs, which will provide studies remote sensing experts and workers at the agriculture and construction sectors

The new nanosatellite is able to take photos from 60-80 meters away, the minister added. Its lifespan is estimated between six months and one year. It is provided with boards to transform solar energy into electrical energy to support itself while rotating around the earth.

Thirteen researchers from NARSS, eight from Cairo University’s Faculty of Engineering, and Egyptian electronics companies are taking part in the project, she added.
