President Mohamed Morsy on Thursday issued a decree to build a new church in the city of Nubaria, Beheira, to be the first during his term.
The Coptic Orthodox church, which would be built on 300 square meters, is to be called the Apostles Peter and Paul Church.
Morsy is completing his first year in office on 30 June.
A source said the application for construction of the church was submitted to authorities 17 years ago.
For his part, Father Makari Habib, secretary of Pope Tawadros II, said he is happy the decree was issued, and expressed deep appreciation for the president.
