Firefighters on Tuesday succeeded in extinguishing the blaze that erupted at 5 PM in the communications department on the top floor of the Interior Ministry building, creating a huge cloud of smoke over downtown Cairo.
They are currently evaluating the damage caused by the fire.
Cairo and five other cities on Tuesday witnessed protests by policemen requesting better financial and working conditions, and demanding the dismissal of Interior Minister Mansour al-Essawy.
They also demanded a reduction in working hours, and the cancellation of military tribunals for civilians.
The protests blocked Sheikh Rihan Street where the ministry is located, and all streets leading to it.
