Civil Defense Forces in Cairo controlled a fire that engulfed 12 shops and a residential building, including a three-story center in the commercial market of Sayyida Zeinab neighborhood at downtown Cairo, on Tuesday.
Investigations revealed losses up to millions of pounds as the most impacted were clothing merchants who were preparing for the winter season. The fire consumed a large amount of clothes, which street vendors would marquee on the ground.
The full extent of the damage continues to be determined.
Eyewitnesses and those affected are being summoned by police to testify before the criminal investigation officers and the Public Prosecution.
Residents first reported to the Cairo Emergency Police that a fire had broken out in a property in Sayyida Zeinab.
Six fire engines were dispatched, and the inspection revealed that the fire had broken out in a commercial market.
A security cordon was imposed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other nearby shops.
Civil protection forces succeeded in extinguishing the fire and carried out cooling work in the commercial market shortly after.
