More than 20 notable artists will feature the Holy Family’s Flight into Egypt and its three-year stay after leaving Palestine, where King Herod intended to kill the infants of Judah and Galilee.
Egypt celebrates the occasion at the beginning of June every year. The family passed through several places, including Farma, Tal Basta, Mostorod, Belbeis, Samannoud, Seryan Monastery at Wadi al-Natrun, Abu Serga Church in Old Cairo, Matereya and Ain Shams.
The family then crossed the Nile to Maadi and then to Upper Egypt, passing through Bahnasa, Gabal al-Teir Monastery in Minya, Ashmoneyeen, Dayrout, and Qesqaa Mountain near Qousseya in Assiut, where Mahraq Monastery is located.
State-run newspaper Al-Ahram reported on Monday that 25 Egyptian artists including Mostafa al-Razzaz, George Bahgoury, Farid Fadel, Ragheb Ayyad, Helmy al-Touny and Effat Hosny would feature the trip through their works, which will be displayed at an exhibition. It is scheduled to be opened by Bishop Martirous on 3 June at Picasso Hall in Zamalek, and to last one month.
The story of the Holy Family’s Flight has special importance to the Coptic Orthodox Church.
Magi came to King Herod in search of Jesus, according to the story. Fearing that the newborn baby could threaten his power, the king intended to kill the infants in the area, causing the Holy Family to flee to Egypt.
