Finance Minister Hazem al-Beblawy has told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) rejected his resignation, which he submitted on Tuesday.
Beblawy, who is also deputy prime minister for economic affairs, said he will continue to consider the issue and has not yet made a final decision regarding the military council's refusal.
Beblawy's resignation statement cited the deteriorating security situation after violence at a Coptic protest Sunday outside the state TV building, which left at least 25 dead and more than 300 injured.
The minister attributed his decision to the government's handling of the incidents as well as internal cabinet disagreements.
His media spokesperson also said he blamed the government for worsening political and economic conditions.
Beblawy's deputy, Momtaz al-Saeed, said the minister's resignation came in protest of the Maspero events and had nothing to do with budget-related issues.
Saeed predicted more negotiations between the government and Beblawy to convince him to reconsider his decision, but added that the ministry would not be affected by his departure.
