Egypt's Ministry of Health on Wednesday decided to toughen precautionary measures concerning medicine and chemical imports from Japan and neighboring countries.
The decision stipulated that prior permission and certificates stating the items are free of nuclear radiation must be obtained before imports are granted entry. The new directives also say that the imports must be inspected by Egypt's nuclear energy authorities.
In March, Egypt's Ministry of Agriculture imposed strict procedures for food imports from Japan due to radiation fears resulting from an explosion at Japan's Fukushima plant. The explosion resulted from a devastating earthquake that ravaged the country on 10 March.
The Agriculture Ministry's restrictions included animal and vegetable products, as well as crops, such as wheat.
Japan is the only state that continues to maintain a travel ban to Egypt since the 25 January revolution began.
