Approximately 4,000 Fayoum University lower-level administrative staff and other employees went on strike Wednesday, locking university gates and preventing the university's president and professors from entering.
They said the minister of Higher Education and the University President Abdel Hamid Abdel Tawwab are ignoring their legitimate demands.
Tawwab condemned the protest and said that there are legitimate channels for the expression of demands.
The protesters want bonus increases, the same medical care as teaching staff and to be allowed to participate in the election of university leadership.
Among other demands, they are calling for bonuses for proctoring exams to be increased from 3 to 5 percent, permanent positions for temporary employees and for the university secretary general to be appointed from among administrative officials, rather than teaching staff.
