Former People's Assembly Speaker Fathi Sorour was referred to the public prosecution by the Tora prison administration on suspicion of smuggling money into prison. Sorour is currently being tried on charges of killing protesters in what has become known as the "Battle of the Camel."
The jail’s inspection department seized contraband mobile phones and LE150 from Sorour following his return from a court hearing on Saturday.
Sorour admitted to having received the money from his daughter during the trial session.
Prison regulations prohibit prisoners from possessing money or personal belongings while in prison.
A number of important figures from ousted President Hosni Mubarak's regime are also being tried in the Battle of the Camel case, including former Secretary General of the dissolved National Democratic Party (NDP) Safwat al-Sherif, who was also Shura Council speaker, and several other NDP members of parliament.
