Family of Hamas deputy chairman arrives in Cairo to seek new home

The family of the deputy chairman of Hamas' political bureau arrived in Egypt Tuesday, as he and his family are seeking to relocate from the Syrian capital of Damascus, London-based Al-Hayat newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The paper added that the deputy, Moussa Abu Marzouq, had arrived two weeks before his family to arrange a suitable accommodation.

A source close to Abu Marzouq told Al-Hayat that the family “is currently in Cairo to arrange the new home.” They will live in a district outside of Cairo.

“It appears that Hamas leaders no longer feel comfortable in Syria, mainly due to security concerns, and therefore are moving their families to other Arab countries,” the source added.

Chief of Hamas' political bureau Khaled Meshaal, who like many of the group's leaders hold Jordanian citizenship, has moved his family to the Jordanian capital of Amman. And despite reservations from some Hamas security officials, military operations leader Emad al-Alami has moved his family to Gaza.

Al-Hayat quoted Palestinian sources as saying that Cairo may have received Abu Marzouq on the condition that he does not engage in any political activities from Egypt.

However, Al-Hayat mentioned that Abu Marzouq's new residence includes a separate apartment to serve as his private office.
