Ezz released on bail for exceeding legal detention duration

Giza Criminal Court decided to release the Business steel tycoon Ahmed Ezz on a LE2 million bail after his complaint was accepted against being detained pending investigations, in the case of squandering LE5 billion of public money in Dekhila steel company.

Ezz earlier filed complaint saying that a court ruling sentenced him to 37 years in prison, fined and ordered him to return back LE300 million. He challenged the verdict at Court of Cassation. No trial has been set yet.

In the complaint, Ezz said he spent more than three years in prison pending investigation in the lawsuit, which violates the law for exceeding the legal duration.

Ezz, former secretary general of the disbanded National Democratic Party, which led the country for 30 years under rule of the deposed President Hosni Mubarak.
