Expert: Ethiopian dam will damage Egypt’s water supply

An expert on a tri-partite committee assessing the consequences of Ethiopia's planned Grand Renaissance Dam has claimed the project would adversely affect Egypt's share of River Nile water supplies.

Alaa al-Zawahri, a member on the committee comprising experts from Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia, told Al Arabiya satellite channel late Wednesday that Ethiopia's Grand Renaissance Dam will be of a great harm to Egypt.

Zawahri said Ethiopia had failed to provide sufficient blueprints and studies to support the project, accusing it of denying Egypt's "historical" right to the River Nile.

Zawahri also claimed he possesses Ethiopian reports which prove that Egypt would lose its water share 40 months after the completion of the Grand Renaissance Dam.

However, he did not provide exact figures to prove his claim.
