Ex-Libyan official refuses to answer interrogators during questioning

The former coordinator of Egypt-Libya relations, Ahmed Qadhaf al-Dam, refused to respond to investigators’ questions Sunday over the charges leveled against him, which include possession of weapons and ammunition as well as attacking police at the time of his arrest.

Prosecutors remanded Qadhaf al-Dam to Tora prison for further investigation until his 30-day detention period is over.

Qadhaf al-Dam had fired at police coming to arrest him at his villa in Zamalek before he surrendered.

Samir Girgis, head of international cooperation at the prosecutor general’s office, had in previous statements said Qadhaf al-Dam does not have Egyptian nationality, nor the right to political asylum in Egypt.

Girgis also said extraditing Qadhaf al-Dam is contingent upon Libyan authorities replying to certain clarifications requested by prosecutors.

“If the reply complies with the extradition treaty signed between Egypt and Libya in 1992, he will be handed over,” he said.

Qadhaf al-Dam is a prominent Libyan figure associated with the regime of former Libyan leader Muammar Qadhafi.
