Court sentences former presidential chief of staff to 7 years in prison

Cairo Criminal Court on Sunday sentenced former presidential Chief of Staff Zakariya Azmy to seven years in prison and fined him LE36 million for abusing power to generate illicit gains of more than LE42.6 million during his time in office.

The Public Prosecution said Azmy and his wife abused his senior position to add to their wealth.

His illicit gains included in-kind and financial gifts, and antiques.

Azmy’s wife, Baheya Halawa, is also obligated to restore the illicit gains she acquired, while her brother, businessman Gamal Halawa, has been sentenced to one year of hard labor.
