James Moran, the European Union's ambassador to Cairo, said in a recent statement that the European Union is against the death sentences issued against toppled President Mohamed Morsi and a number of Muslim Brotherhood members as the union rejects the death penalty whatever the magnitude of the crimes.
Moran told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the union's rejection to the death penalty does not indicate that criminals should not be prosecuted, but that EU countries reject in principle the death sentence.
The EU has also rejected the death penalty in the US, China and India, Moran said. He added that rejecting the death penalty is not an interference with the work of the judiciary, but a clear stance on the death sentence in general.
With regards to the killing of three judges in Arish, North Sinai, Moran said the EU backs Egypt in its war against terrorism.
