Ethiopian Ambassador to Egypt Mahmoud Dirir said on Thursday that the various projects his country is building on the Nile will not be detrimental to the interests of Egypt and Sudan. Dirir made the comments in a meeting with Egyptian Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Hussein al-Atfy.
Al-Atfy said that he and the ambassador discussed the possibilities for mutual cooperation in developing water resources and exchanging expertise.
In related news, Egyptian Assistant Foreign Minister Mona Omar, in her meeting with Kenyan Assistant Foreign Minister Richard Onyonka, said an Egyptian-Kenyan council had been formed to boost economic cooperation between the two countries.
“The council will discuss unified taxes on business projects in order to encourage investors in both countries,” she said.
For his part, Onyonka said Kenya would not harm Egypt’s interests in the Nile water quotas.
“We will also support Egyptian exports to the COMESSA countries,” said Onyonka.
