A report by the General Authority for Veterinary Services (GAVS) said there are 34,482 suspected cases of foot-and-mouth disease in Egypt, with recorded deaths of 3,422 calves and a mortality rate among cows of no more than two to three percent.
According to the report, 1,412 out of 15,365 cases resulted in deaths in Gharbiya, 288 of 4,231 cases in Daqahlia were fatal, 1,779 cases in Alexandria ended in 97 deaths, 1,026 cases in Qalyubiya resulted in 82 deaths, 168 out of 1,049 cases in Suez were fatal, 53 of the 1,286 cases in Giza were fatal, and 1,088 cases in Minya resulted in 106 deaths.
“Infections in the rest of the governorates were in the hundreds and deaths in dozens,” said Suhair Abdel Qader, head of the Preventive Medicine Department of the GAVS, adding that no cases were reported in North and South Sinai or the Red Sea Governorate.
“Live animal markets were temporarily closed to avoid the mixing of animals,” she said, explaining that the analysis of the samples that arrived from the Global Reference Laboratory in London confirmed that the FMD is type Sat 2, detected for the first time in Egypt. According to Abdel Qader, the Vaccines Center in Abbasseya is developing immunization for the healthy animals.
