Security forces on Monday prevented 70 prisoners from escaping from the Mansheyet Nasser prison in northeast Cairo.
A security official said five prisoners managed to break open some doors within the prison. Seventy then gathered and attempted to escape.
Security forced them back into their cells by firing shots in the air. Central security trucks were summoned to bolster security in coordination with the armed forces.
A report of the incident has been filed.
