Erian: Parliament return reflects struggle between people and old regime

MP Essam al-Erian, vice president of the Freedom and Justice Party, defended President Mohamed Morsy's decision to restore parliament until a new constitution is drafted.

He said the decision to recall Parliament reflects the "struggle between the will of the people and the desire to restore former President Hosni Mubarak's regime."

"Looking at the clamor created by opponents to President Mohamed Morsy reveals the truth about this conflict and who has genuinely sided with the people's revolution," Erian posted on Twitter.

He added that supporters of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, who persuaded it to keep legislative power, are the same who pretend to defend the independence of the judiciary.

Even though the Supreme Constitutional Court ordered the dissolution of parliament, President Mohamed Morsy on Sunday decided to restore parliament until a new constitution is written. New elections would then be held within 60 days of the issue of the new constitution.

In a statement issued on Monday, the court said its rulings are binding to all state institutions. The head of the Judges Club, Ahmed al-Zend, gave Morsy 36 hours to backtrack on his decision, hinting that judges would escalate action if Parliament remains.
