Scores of engineers staged a protest on Monday in front of their syndicate to demand the release of 28 of their colleagues who are detained in Tora Prison over alleged involvement in the Abbasseya violence.
They also demanded the end of military trials of civilians.
Syndicate head Maged Kholousy said he met with the military prosecutor, who promised to reevaluate the charges leveled against the detainees in the coming 48 hours.
He added that the syndicate assigned 25 lawyers to defend their colleagues.
“My son was arrested inside the Al-Nour Mosque though he did not participate in the protests. When I visited him in prison, I found out that he was beaten,” said Mohamed Abdel Meguid, the father of a detained engineer.
