Parliament approves extension of emergency state

The Egyptian Parliament approved on Tuesday the extension of the current emergency state for an additional three months, after President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi issued a decree to extend the period.

According to a state-run media outlet, Sisi said in a petition sent to the Parliament that due to dangerous security circumstances Egypt is currently witnessing, the emergency state should be extended.

Head of the Parliament Ali Abdel Aal said during the voting session on the extension of the emergency state that threats against Egypt’s national security are still active; however, some thought otherwise.

Egypt has been under a state of emergency since April, in the wake of deadly attacks that targeted two churches located in Egypt’s cities of Tanta and Alexandria. The two attacks killed 49 people and injured more than 100.
