Eleven people were killed and 23 injured in a road accident on Qarun Lake Road near Fayoum's Shakshook Village, a security source said Tuesday.
The same source told Al-Masry Al-Youm that two speeding microbuses had collided head on. Injured passengers–two of them in critical condition–had been taken to hospital, the source said, adding that the authorities would give LE5000 each to the families of the deceased and LE2000 to those of the injured.
Road accidents are the second leading cause of death in Egypt. According to recent government estimates, an average of 18 Egyptians a day were killed in road accidents last year.
The high rate of road accidents is generally attributed to poor road conditions, failure to follow traffic laws and drug abuse on the part of truck drivers.
