Egypt's state-run news agency MENA reported Monday that the date for opening nominations for the upcoming parliamentary elections will be announced by the last week of September.
Nominations for both the People’s Assembly and Shura Council elections will be submitted together. The People's Assembly elections will take place first, in three stages, followed by elections for the Shura Council.
Both the People’s Assembly and Shura Council elections were originally set to take place at the same time, but MENA reported that it has been decided to hold them separately to ensure security and adequate judicial supervision.
The elections will take place no sooner than 30 days after the date is announced.
MENA quoted a source as estimating the total number of voters to be 50 million. Voters will be distributed among 52,000 polling stations, almost 1000 voters at each station.
Each stage of the election will require 9000 judges to supervise the process, the source added, in addition to judges needed to oversee elections for public committees, governorate committees, as well as to examine requests and objections – thus each stage will actually require 10,000 judges.
Head of the ruling military council Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi met on Sunday with the heads of Egypt's judicial authorities, as well as with the High Elections Commission, which will supervise the elections. They discussed arrangements for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
