Parliamentary election candidate Tahani al-Gebaly has accused the candidates from the “For the Love of Egypt” list of treason for receiving funds from the Muslim Brotherhood in Kuwait on Thursday.
During a press statement on Monday, Gebaly showed pictures and videos of several men at the Thursday conference. They included Sameh Seif al-Yazal, the rapporteur for the “For the Love of Egypt” list and Osama Heikal, a candidate from the list. The men were seen meeting with Mahmoud Sabri, the financier of the Muslim Brotherhood in Kuwait, Azmi Abdel Fattah, the head of the Egyptian community in Kuwait and Samir Ahmed, one of the group's leaders there.
“This is a betrayal of the Egyptian people who revolted against the group on June 30,” she said. “They want to bring the Brotherhood back.”
“We spotted members of the Brotherhood while voting for the list on the first day of the second round,” Gebaly added.
She also accused the list of receiving funds from the United States and France.
Responding to the accusation, Osama Heikal called it a defamation of character, which he will take to court. “Our visit to Kuwait was announced,” he said. “Had there been anything fishy about it, we would have kept it secret.”
“She accused us before of being remnants of the Mubarak regime,” he added. “Now she says we are affiliated with the Brotherhood. Who will believe her?”
Heikal requested the High Elections Committee intervene immediately, as such accusations affect the voters.
