Officials allegedly responsible for torturing to death a citizen in an Alexandria police station must be penalized, said the former director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mohammad ElBaradei, on Saturday.
The family of Sayed Belal, a Salafi sheikh who lived in Alexandria, accuse security forces of killing him at a police station.
"God bless Mr. Belal. We are awaiting the outcome of investigations," ElBaradei said in a message on the social network service twitter.
"If torture is proven to have occurred, officials at all levels must be punished. Torture is a crime against humanity. It is not an internal affair," added ElBaradei.
The general prosecutor in Alexandria started investigations on Friday. The police say that Belal was suspected of being involved in the bombing of the Church of St. Mark and St. Peter on New Year's Eve. The attack killed 23 and wounded scores.
