ElBaradei calls for boycotting presidential elections

Egyptian voters should boycott next year’s presidential elections, said Mohamed ElBaradei, former International Atomic Energy Agency Director, in a video clip posted on his website.

He warned the government of possible acts of violence if it continued to thwart peaceful demonstrations demanding reform.

“We have become no different than Haiti or Afghanistan,” he said, labeling this year’s parliamentary elections a “farce.”

“The regime is killing all opportunities for change,” he continued. “If it does not meet our demands, we shall resort to civil disobedience.”

“We are like slaves under a constitution depriving us of political rights,” he added, claiming that “the whole world is moving forward while we are moving backward.”

Nevertheless, there is still hope for change, he asserted.
