The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which has been ruling Egypt since former President Hosni Mubarak was ousted on 11 February, warned of attempts to impede the referendum on the newly proposed constitutional amendments slated for 19 March, adding that anyone attempting to do so would be punished under the law on thuggery.
The council warned of marches, rallies or sit-ins on the day of the referendum so as to provide the right climate for it to be held in a civilized and democratic manner.
The council last week adopted severe penalties–including capital punishment–for thugs who caused the death of innocent people.
