Egypt’s security services arrest alleged Israeli spy

Security services arrested a purported Mossad officer for allegedly spying on Egypt by transferring information during the revolution. The suspect was seen by the security services in places where accidents of sectarian strife in Imbaba village and Sol village had erupted.

The public prosecution started investigating the suspect on Sunday.

Al-Masry Al-Youm was informed that the Egyptian intelligence will soon disclose details about suspect’s arrest and spy ring he works with.

Sources added that the security apparatuses have been monitoring the suspect since he entered the country in February. Videos were taken of him around Tahrir Square during the post-25 January uprising protests and in front of the Atfeeh church and Imbaba’s Virgin Mary church while sectarian clashes were taking place.

According to the allegations, security services found with him a laptop and a satellite phone through which he contacted the Israelis. He also sent information about Egypt by email to the Mossad.

During investigations, the suspect denied the accusations. Judicial sources did not state whether he had partners.

“More details will be announced later,” said the sources, “but this case is of great importance, especially after reported news about tensions between Cairo and Tel Aviv.”

“There may be details in the case that spark crisis between Egypt and Israel,” the sources added.
