Egypt’s ruling NDP denies flight of party leaders abroad following demos

National Democratic Party (NDP) Secretary-General Safwat al-Sherif on Thursday denied rumors that some party leaders had fled Egypt following the “Day of Anger” protests staged in cities across the country on Tuesday and Wednesday.

At a press conference following a party meeting, al-Sherif said, "The NDP does not escape… we have done nothing and therefore have nothing to fear.”

"Party leaders will remain in Egypt since they have a strong commitment to their national duty,” he added. “We're right here, as you can see, and we will continue to stand tall for the homeland."

"There is no truth to these rumors," he stressed.

Arab news agencies had earlier reported that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s son, Gamal–who is widely believed to be his father's choice to succeed him–had left Cairo for London in the wake of Tuesday's demonstrations.
