Egypt’s prosecution interrogates Mubarak in South Sinai hospital

A well-informed judicial source says that ousted President Hosni Mubarak is currently undergoing interrogation at a hospital in South Sinai. He is charged with ordering the shooting of demonstrators and with profiteering.

Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud ordered Deputy Attorney General Mostafa Suleiman to travel to Sharm el-Sheikh to conduct the interrogation. The move was viewed as a concrete step toward investigating Mubarak and his two sons.

The source said the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), the attorney general and the interior minister met on Tuesday to discuss investigation procedures, as the Interior Ministry had said it would be difficult to secure Mubarak against possible assaults by the public if the interrogation was held in Cairo. He therefore suggested conducting it in South Sinai.

As to his son Gamal, the source said a special unit of the Interior Ministry completed security arrangements for bringing him from Sharm el-Sheikh; he is to appear before the Illicit Gains Authority in Cairo for investigation.

The SCAF said the security arrangements are the responsibility of the Interior Ministry, and the council plays no role in making them.
