Egypt’s Parliament committee rejects lifting immunity for two MPs

The Legislative Committee of the House of Representatives on Saturday rejected the top prosecutor’s request to lift the immunity of parliament member Mahmoud Emara over investigations conducted by the Public Prosecution in case No. 28781 for the year 2018, and for parliament member Rania al-SadatĀ over investigations conducted by the Public Prosecution in Case No. 1 of 2018.

Several police officers had filed a claim against Emara accusing him of insulting and beating a low-ranking police officer and injuring him, preventing the officers from performing their duties as well as inciting the public to gather and block the main road leading to the village of al-Wafaaeya.

The police force had been carrying out a decision by the public prosecutor when Emara allegedly assaulted them, and then shielded behind his position as a MP.

The Legislative Committee also refused to lift the immunity of Sadat, following communication submitted by Ahmed Fawzi Mostafa against Sadat accusing her of defaming him on social media.
