Egypt has expressed its commitment to maintaining dialogue with Nile Basin countries to resolve pending disagreements over cooperative use of the river’s waters, but in a way that protects its annual water shares stipulated by the international agreements.
Following a meeting by the Supreme Committee of Nile Water yesterday, chaired by Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif, the government stressed its committment to the success of the Nile Basin Initiative, launched in 1999, and to reaching an agreement with other basin states.
The government reiterated its opposition to any agreement that encroaches on its water shares or those of Sudan, calling upon Nile Basin states to return to negotiations.
Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif invited the Nile states to undertake water projects prepared by Egypt and that can help increase their water supply. Nazif noted that President Mubarak will meet with a number of African leaders during the next French-African summit, to be held in the coming week.
