Egypt’s National Dialogue announces release of 79 pretrial detainees

The National Dialogue in Egypt announced the release of 79 pretrial detainees by the Public Prosecution, and thanked President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for his interest in the issue and willingness to address the problems of pretrial detention and refer it to those in charge of the National Dialogue.

A member of the Presidential Pardon Committee, Tariq al-Awadi, said that the public is interested in the National Dialogue’s sessions on pretrial detention and await the outcomes to resolve the issue, but this will not happen until political will is in place to implement these outcomes.

The National Dialogue said in a statement on Monday that the Board of Trustees of the National Dialogue announced that it will hold sessions to discuss amending the Code of Criminal Procedure, to address the problems of pretrial detention and come up with recommendations.

The statement added that the Board of Trustees of the National Dialogue pays great attention to discussing the Criminal Procedures Code to address pretrial detention in order to ensure a prompt and fair trial and to preserve human rights.

It thanked the Minister of Interior, Mahmoud Tawfiq, and the Attorney General, Mohamed Shawky, for the great efforts they have made to complete the procedures for releasing the 79 detainees in response to the appeal of the Board of Trustees of the National Dialogue.
