Egypt’s ministry of Antiquities started on Wednesday the restoration of the golden coffin of King Tutankhamun, following the ministry’s transfer of the coffin from King Tut’s cemetery in Luxor to the Grand Egyptian Museum.
General Secretary of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mustafa Waziri asserted that the ministry will restore the coffin for the first time since the cemetery was discovered in 1922.
Director General of Archaeological Affairs at the Grand Egyptian Museum Tayeb Abbas said that the ministry will present the coffin and the other golden coffins currently in the Egyptian Museum of Cairo within the museum display for King Tutankhamun at the Grand Egyptian Museum.
Director General of the Preliminary Restoration and Antiquities Transfer at the Grand Egyptian Museum Issa Zidan clarified that work for restoration and maintenance of the coffin will last eight months and will treat the cracks in the coffin’s golden plaster layers.
The ministry noted that the museum will invite all local and international media within the next two weeks once the sterilization of the coffin has been completed.
