Egypt’s new consul in Kurdistan, Suleiman Othman, on Thursday began diplomatic operations in the semi-autonomous Iraqi region. Othman arrived in the region's capital, Erbil, the previous day.
Othman is the first Egyptian and Arab official consul in Kurdistan. The diplomat received a heartening welcome from Iraqi officials in the region, he added.
Othman said consulate construction remains underway in preparation for its official inauguration.
Egypt’s Foreign Ministry intends to open another consulate in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, according to a diplomatic source.
Cairo in late October announced aims to open a commercial representation office in Erbil to bolster Egyptian trade and investments with Kurdistan.
