Egypt’s newly-appointed consul to Iraq’s Kurdish region, Suleiman Othman, is due to arrive in Erbil Tuesday night. He is expected to assume office on Wednesday.
Iraqi diplomatic sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm Othman will begin his mandate by holding meetings with Kurdish officials at the newly constructed Egyptian consulate.
Othman is the first Arab consul to represent his country in the semi-autonomous region.
In October, Cairo announced its new consul was due to launch operations in Erbil, the Kurdish capital, by mid-November. The declaration was made before a visit by Kurdish PM Burhum Saleh late in the month.
Cairo recently also publicized interest in opening a commercial representation office in Erbil with the aim of expanding trade and investment between the two countries.
