Egypt’s hotel occupancy rates up despite sharks, Europe freeze

Hotel occupancy rates in Cairo and the Red Sea governorates have risen by 7-8 percent from last year, an official from the Tourism Ministry has said.

Ahmed Ateyya, deputy minister of tourism and head of the hotel and resorts sector, also said that occupancy rates for Arab tourists increased from 62 percent last year to 74 percent this year.

He added that he expects the cold wave in Europe to have a limited impact on numbers of tourists coming from European countries.

Commenting on a string of shark attacks that took place recently in Sharm al-Sheikh, Ateyya said that they had had a “very limited impact” on the flow of tourists.
