Egypt's ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces may select Nabil Fahmy, a former ambassador to the US, as foreign minister, sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm.
Former Foreign Minister Nabil al-Araby will take over from Amr Moussa as Arab League secretary general.
Fahmy served as Egypt's ambassador to Washington from 1999 to 2008. He is currently dean of the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the American University in Cairo.
Governmental sources said Prime Minister Essam Sharaf will hold talks on Monday to select Araby's replacement.
Egypt on Sunday withdrew the nomination of Mostafa al-Fiqqi to the Arab league post, a step taken to end disputes over the nomination led by Qatar and Sudan.
Fiqqi, who had been affiliated with the former ruling National Democratic Party, gained support from 12 Arab countries, while Qatari nominee Abdel Rahman al-Attiyah was supported by only nine countries. According to the League's internal code, a candidate should garner the support of 15 countries.
