Egypt’s Foreign Ministry refutes rumors about closing embassy in Syria

The spokesperson for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, denied rumors about the closure of the Egyptian embassy in Syria.

“We have a chargé d’affaires at the embassy, ​​the embassy has not closed, and it plays important roles in helping our Syrian brothers, such as with delivering Egyptian aid to Syria,” he stressed.

During a Sunday phone-in with Egyptian TV host Lamis al-Hadidi on her show “Last Word” (Kalema Akhera), Khallaf assured that Egypt will continue to follow the tremendous political developments in Syria.

Egypt is eager to ensure that Syria does not pose a threat to the countries of the region or become an incubator for terrorism, he added.

The ambassador explained that Egypt’s position in Syria is based around four key points:

  • Preserving the unity and integrity of Syrian territory,
  • Supporting Syrian national institutions to enable them to perform their role in serving the people
  • Adopting a comprehensive political process with Syrian ownership that includes all components of the people without exclusion
  • Ensuring that the political process reflects the religious and sectarian diversity in Syria
