During 2010 Egypt exported ornamental plants and cut flowers worth more than LE150 million, an official said on Wednesday.
Egypt enjoys a relative advantage in the production and exportation of cut flowers and decorative plants, Saad Nassar, advisor to the Minister of Agriculture, said during the inauguration of this year's Flora Egypt, the sixth such international flowers fair. The event is organized by the Union of Producers and Exporters of Horticultural Crops, the Egyptian Flower Council, and Egypt's Agricultural Export Council, among other organizers. It takes places from 12-15 January.
Nassar described Egypt as a "winter garden" for ornamental flowers from Asia and EU states.
He added that an Egyptian-European partnership agreement allows Egypt to export flowers to EU states throughout the year, custom-free. He predicted that the agreement will encourage more Egyptian flower exports to Europe over coming years.
The fair in Nasr City, which will showcase 160 million of the most valuable and attractive flowers in the world, is expected to attract 30,000 visitors.
