Egypt is preparing to return to Daylight Saving Time, starting at midnight on Friday April 25.
At exactly 12:00 am, the clocks will be set forward by 60 minutes, becoming 1:00 am instead of 12:00 am, in implementation of the provisions of Law No. 34 of 2023.
The House of Representatives approved the law, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ratified it on April 16, 2023, as part of the state’s efforts to rationalize electricity consumption.
Daylight Saving Time will continue until Thursday, October 30, 2025, when clocks will be set back 60 minutes to return to winter time.
What is Daylight Saving Time and why do we use it?
Daylight Saving Time is a global system that aims to maximize daylight savings by advancing clocks during the summer months to reduce reliance on electric lighting at night.
It is then set back during the winter, when daylight hours are shorter.
Egypt adopted this system for many years, but after the January 25, 2011 revolution, complaints about its impact on daily life arose.
However, with economic challenges and rising electricity costs, the government decided to reinstate Daylight Saving Time in 2023 as a solution to reduce electricity consumption.
