In 2009, Egypt's 72,000 pilgrims spent an estimated LE1.9 billion in Hajj-related expenditures, averaging LE26,100 per pilgrim, according to an Egyptian government report.

The Information and Decision-Making Support Center study said every lottery pilgrim cost, on average, LE20,900, while pilgrims who used charity organizations and travel agencies to make the pilgrimage cost LE23,200 and LE30,900, respectively.

The average total expenditure by pilgrims who traveled by sea stands at LE23,600, compared to LE26,400 for those who traveled by land and LE28,300 for those who flew to the Saudi destinations.

The report–conducted through a random sample of 1700 Egyptian pilgrims–said the average sum given to a Hajj trip organization to provide airfare and accommodation reached LE21,300. Slightly more than 88 percent of the pilgrims said food was included in that total.

The report also mentioned that the average amount of money spent by a Egyptian pilgrim before physically departing for Hajj was an estimated LE772.
